Restoration Project

The Enniskillen Workhouse, the last surviving part of the historic building that served as a general hospital after its closure in 1948, has been successfully redeveloped through a partnership between Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and South West College.

Securing £2.3 million in funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2019, the entrance block of the Workhouse has sympathetically been restored to become a place of opportunity.

The Workhouse has undergone a transformation, now serving as a flexible and dynamic business incubation workspace. At the same time, recognising the importance to preserve and retell the historical story during the famine and its significance in the socio-economic history of Enniskillen and the wider county thereafter.

The restored Entrance Block, covering approximately 494 square meters, now serves as a landmark that commemorates the scale of suffering during the famine and beyond.
Part of the ground floor space, including the Porter’s Room, has been restored to tell the story of the Workhouse through interpretative panels, artefacts, and exhibits related to the lives associated with it.
